Texan Eye Centers in Georgetown, Bastrop, Burnet, and across Austin offer a full spectrum of general, medical, and surgical ophthalmology services. For patients seeking lens prescriptions, our highly trained optometrists are available to provide primary vision care. During every eye examination, our doctors look for eye diseases and measure visual acuity before prescribing contact lenses, glasses, or eye medication. Our optometrists also refer patients to other Texan Eye physicians for cataract surgery and laser vision correction, providing follow-up care if needed.

Laser Vision Correction
Traditional LASIK surgery is not always the best treatment for every patient. At Texan Eye, we offer a variety of laser eye surgery procedures to restore vision. To find out if ASA-PRK or monovison LASIK is right for you, contact one of our Austin area ophthalmology centers today.
ASA-PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy)
ASA (advanced surface ablation) PRK is designed to change the shape of the cornea to reduce or eliminate refractive error. During LASIK surgery, the surgeon creates a corneal flap and then uses an excimer laser to sculpt the inside of the cornea. ASA-PRK does not require the creation of a corneal flap. Instead, the epithelium (the outermost layer of the eye) is removed and the surface of the cornea is sculpted with the excimer laser.
At our Austin eye centers, PRK was the original laser vision correction procedure used to treat mild to moderate myopia (nearsightedness). ASA-PRK refers to the treatment of refractive error with Wavefront™ guided technology. ASA-PRK is FDA approved to treat both nearsightedness and farsightedness. For many of our Central Texas and Austin area patients, ASA-PRK will produce the best results. ASA-PRK remains an ideal treatment for patients with thin corneas, corneal scarring, or corneal erosion. These patients often cannot tolerate LASIK because it requires the removal of corneal tissue.
Though ASA-PRK requires longer recovery time, it produces excellent results for patients with low to moderate levels of astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness.

Monovision
At Texan Eye centers in Austin, we use monovision to treat presbyopia and improve close-up vision for reading. Monovision refers to the process of focusing one eye (the dominant eye) for distance vision and the other eye for near vision. Essentially, monovision is a blending of near and distance vision. At our eye centers in greater Austin, we can achieve monovision with prescription eyewear, intraocular lens implants, or LASIK surgery. In each case, the doctor simply leaves the non-dominant eye nearsighted to allow the dominant eye to focus on distant objects. This is an effective treatment for presbyopia, a condition that inhibits the ability of the eye to change focus, or accommodate, for near vision.
The ideal candidate for monovision is someone who is willing to sacrifice a certain amount of depth perception in order to be free from glasses. For patients in Austin and Central Texas who require sharp distance or near vision for activities like golf, monovision may not be the best solution. The best way to find out if monovision is appropriate for you is to schedule a consultation at one of our Austin ophthalmology centers. Our optometrists can prescribe contact lenses that will produce monovision - this will give you an idea of what to expect following permanent vision correction with monovision laser vision correction.

Cataract Surgery
When cataracts are in the early stage of development, they can be treated with prescription eyeglasses or contacts. As cataracts progress and begin to significantly interfere with vision, our Central Texas and Austin patients can undergo Full Focus® cataract surgery to replace the cloudy lenses with multifocal lens implants.
At Texan Eye centers in Austin, Georgetown, Bastrop, and Burnet, cataract surgery has become more popular than ever since the introduction of new accommodating lens implants like Crystalens®, ReZOOM™, and ReSTOR®. Complications following cataract surgery with lens implants are extremely rare, and the entire procedure can usually be completed in less than 15 minutes. During cataract surgery, the eyes are numbed with anesthetic eye drops (no needles are required), and the lenses clouded by the cataracts are removed and replaced with lens implants. The implants are inserted through a micro incision and naturally adhere to the eye without the need for stitches.
At our Central Texas and Austin eye centers, the goal of Full Focus® cataract surgery is to enhance vision across a full range of distances. For cataract surgery patients who also suffer from presbyopia or refractive error, we are proud to offer Crystalens®, ReZOOM™, and ReSTOR® lens implants. These accommodating lens implants are designed to improve focusing power at near, intermediate, and far distances, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses following cataract surgery.
