Texan Eye in Austin - Offering Custom Wavefront™ LASIK and PRK

For years, our eye surgeons have achieved exceptional results with laser vision correction surgery. We always strive to offer the latest technology in order to improve the safety and efficacy of laser vision correction. One of the latest advances in refractive surgery currently featured at our Austin eye centers is Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK using Wavefront™ technology. Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK takes laser vision correction surgery to a new level by providing more precision for the surgeon and producing better results for the patient.

If you are considering refractive surgery, view the following information to find out if you may be eligible for vision correction at one of our Austin eye centers with Custom Wavefront™ LASIK and ASA-PRK.

What is Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK?

Custom LASIK - Improved quality of vision

The theory behind Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK is that no two eyes are alike. Custom Wavefront™ LASIK and ASA-PRK go beyond the basic classifications of refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism) to measure the tiny visual imperfections that make each eye unique. To prepare for Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK, the surgeon uses a device to measure the patient’s entire visual system, producing what is known as a "Wavefront™ Map." This three-dimensional map contains highly detailed information about each small imperfection in the eyes. When this Wavefront™ LASIK map is loaded onto the excimer laser computer, the computer creates a personalized treatment plan that is designed to correct even the smallest refractive errors.

How are Custom Wavefront™ LASIK and ASA-PRK different than traditional surgeries?

Custom Wavefront™ LASIK and ASA-PRK and traditional laser vision correction techniques are virtually the same, the main distinction is the detail of eye measurement taken prior to surgery. With traditional laser vision correction, the eye surgeon programs the excimer laser to reshape the cornea based on the patient’s lens prescription. If two patients have the same glasses or contact lens prescription, they will receive an identical laser treatment plan. While Texan Eye has achieved excellent results for patients with this method of treatment, our ophthalmologists in Austin can now offer more precision with Custom Wavefront™ LASIK and ASA-PRK. During Custom Wavefront™ LASIK and ASA-PRK, the excimer laser is programmed based on detailed measurements of each individual patient’s entire visual system, not just their optical prescription.

Will Custom LASIK and PRK offer better results than traditional treatment?

According to clinical studies, the majority of patients who undergo Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK vision correction achieve 20/20 vision or better following surgery. Studies have also demonstrated that Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK patients report significant improvement in night vision as well as day vision. However, the greatest single benefit of Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK is the drastic improvement in night vision. Our patients in Central Texas and greater Austin who undergo Custom LASIK or ASA-PRK consistently report fewer incidences of post-operative halos and glare at night than patients who receive traditional laser vision correction.

Who is a candidate for Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK?

While traditional laser vision correction is designed to treat patients with lower order refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism), Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK can be used to treat both lower and higher order aberrations. Patients with higher order aberrations usually cannot achieve the best possible vision through traditional laser vision correction, sometimes suffering from diminished night vision, halos, and glare post-surgery. For these patients, Custom LASIK or ASA-PRK is the best option. At Texan Eye, Custom LASIK and ASA-PRK procedures are tailored to treat many of the small imperfections in the eye, often resulting in better overall vision.

Custom LASIK with the IntraLase® Laser

Both traditional and Custom LASIK can now be performed as an "all-laser" procedure with the IntraLase® laser. The IntraLase® laser is used to create a corneal flap of a precise size, shape, and depth, to produce the best possible results during laser vision correction. The IntraLase® laser also helps to ensure that the first step of both Custom LASIK surgery (the creation of the corneal flap) will be safe and accurate.
